When the world teeters on the brink of destruction, Dietrich Bonhoeffer joins a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, risking his faith and destiny to save millions of Jews from genocide. Niemöller actor August Diehl previously played an SS Gestapo officer in Inglourious Basterds (2009) and a German citizen who resisted joining the German army in “Hidden Life” (2019).. Dietrich Bonhoeffer: We have no defense against stupidity. Neither protests nor force can touch her. Arguments are useless. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply not be believed – moreover, a fool can object by criticizing them, and if they are indisputable, they can simply be dismissed as trivial exceptions.. Well shot and played. However, the film devoted too much time to Bonhoeffer’s trip to New York in 1930 and his alleged fascination with gospel music and jazz. In fact, his later prison letters reveal the lasting influence of Paul Gerhardt’s traditional Lutheran hymns and hymns on his theology and piety. There was no mention of his engagement to Maria von Wedemeyer (eighteen years his junior), with whom he exchanged dozens of letters during his imprisonment (1943-1945), and later published as “Love Letters from Cell 92”. It was Maria’s grandmother who financed the seminary of the Confessing Church in Finkenwald, where Bonhoeffer advocated a kind of “new monasticism” for seminarians – with traditional chants and orderly reading of psalms. The plot line that weaved Maria into the end of Bonhoeffer’s life could raise some compelling questions, for example, “Why get engaged if your world is about to collapse?”. All in all, it is good that a film was made about Bonhoeffer, which brought his story of struggle for truth to a wider audience.
